The Forgotten Children display, sponsored by National CASA, opened May 19, 2008, at the National Mall in Washington, DC. 850 cutouts were placed in front of the Washington Monument, representing the number of children who enter the foster care system in America each day. An additional 850 children appeared at the monument on each of the next four days until the total reached 4,250 children on May 23, 2008. The messages featured on the signs held by the display’s foster children were quotes heard in focus group sessions conducted with foster youth in 2007. Following the launch of the campaign, Dr. Phil McGraw, syndicated daytime talk show host, and his wife Robin announced their support of this year long campaign and their role as its official spokesperson on the Dr. Phil Show. |

The South Carolina Volunteer Guardian ad Litem Program was one of six programs throughout the country chosen to bring the Forgotten Children project to a state level. In South Carolina, over 100 children every week become involved with the Family Court system due to abuse and neglect. Many of these children are removed from their families and enter the foster care system. Our goal as a program is for each of these children to have a volunteer Guardian ad Litem who can stand up, be their voice and be their advocate. To kick off the Forgotten Children campaign, 104 of the cutouts were displayed at rallies held throughout the state in November. The Forgotten Children cutouts were held by volunteers, as a symbol of their committment to stand behind these children and not let them be forgotten. The Forgotten Children will continue to travel around the state, to help raise awareness of the issues of children in foster care, and the need for more volunteers throughout South Carolina. |
